Mike Combs started his career at the City of
Greenwood Fire Department in 1985 as a cadet where he obtained the minimum
education to become a firefighter. He accomplished this by becoming a
probationary firefighter in 1989 after graduating high school. Mike
continued with Greenwood until 1990 where he wanted to pursue other avenues but
continued with the firefighting education. In 1997, Mike joined the White River Township Fire Department as a reserve firefighter and then shortly thereafter, became a part-time firefighter. Mike still held down a full-time job as well working for the Johnson County Sheriff's Department as the 911 Coordinator for Johnson County and a 911 Dispatcher, a job he has done for better part of 15 years. In October 2004, Mike and 19 other individuals were hired as career firefighters in the department's first major hiring process, recruit class 2004-01. Mike currently serves as an Engineer/Paramedic on the "B" shift driving Captain Jeff Smith. Mike is also a Certified Fire and Explosion and a Certified Vehicle Fire Investigator. He also serves as a Communications Specialist for INTF-1(Indiana Task Force-One), the FEMA USAR (Urban Search and Rescue) Team. In 2002, Mike was appointed Director of Communications. The job description requires handling of all mobile and portable radios, firehouse alerting systems, local GIS data and any other duties the fire chief deems necessary. Mike also works closely with Mike Watkins with the Greenwood Fire Department who also serves as their Communications Director.
